WHERE FORM BEGINS TO SURFACE

Layered, intuitive paintings shaped by movement, memory, and instinct.

About

Laura Castien (*1981, Düsseldorf) is a Munich-based artist. After studying illustration at Parsons School of Design in New York and founding the ceramic label Motel a Miio in 2016, she returned to her painterly roots in 2024.

Her mixed media works are defined by an immediate, gestural approach. Layers of color, line, and trace condense into open visual spaces where intuition and structure intersect. Emerging from the moment, her work leaves room for association, rupture, and transformation.

My inspiration

Painting, for me, is a process of finding
rather than placing.

I work without a fixed outcome, allowing each mark to suggest the next — guided by curiosity, by surrounding impressions,
and by fragments of memory.

Inspiration comes from what is observed and felt: shadowplay, shifting light, organic shapes in nature, textures found in passing moments. These elements are not translated directly, but absorbed and reformed through the work.

Layers are added, removed, and reworked — building surfaces that hold both movement and tension.

Forms emerge, dissolve, and reappear,
never fully settling.

What remains is not an image to define,
but something to return to — a space where memory, observation, and gesture continue to unfold.
